Bob Doyel

Florida Senate District 22
Updated: August 14, 2018

Summary

Judge Bob Doyel was the youngest of ten children, raised by a single mom in a home without electricity or running water. When he was four, their house burned down and destroyed what little they had. He learned the value of hard work at a young age, made his way to college and the Navy, and later became a judge. As a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam, Doyel believes it’s immoral that so many veterans aren’t receiving the care or respect they need. He will be an advocate for American men and women in uniform by fighting for increased funding for veterans’ health care and by creating more job opportunities for returning service members.

Kelli Stargel is a typical politician who looks out for special interests, not the people of Polk and Lake Counties. Stargel sold out local public schools, slashing classroom funding and giving local tax dollars to for-profit schools. She threatened local drinking water and put families at risk, by supporting a bill to replenish local tap water with treated sewage water, from human waste. And Stargel voted to block access to affordable healthcare and cut funding women’s health care, including cancer screenings and birth control. Stargel cannot be trusted to protect women, children, and families.

About Bob

Judge Doyel’s record speaks for itself:

VETS: As a Navy veteran who served in Vietnam, Bob believes it’s immoral that so many veterans aren’t receiving the care or respect they need. He will be an advocate for American men and women in uniform by fighting for increased funding for veterans’ health care and by creating more job opportunities for returning service members.

RAPE KITS: Judge Doyel has been a fierce advocate to track down serial rapists in Florida. He says it is outrageous that there are over thirteen thousand untested rape kits in Florida, and this is a public safety issue, with unsolved sexual crimes against women and children. Doyel will push to test these rape kits and help law enforcement solve crimes. Doyel will not rest until more rapists are behind bars.

ROOTS: Judge Doyel was the youngest of ten children, raised by a single mom in a home without electricity, running water, or plumbing. When he was four, their house burned down and destroyed what little they had. He learned the value of hard work at a young age, made his way to college and the Navy, and later became a judge. Doyel promises to put hard working people before special interests — because he knows what it means to struggle, work hard, and get ahead.

His bio and values will resonate across the district’s demographics:

Voters who didn’t get a college degree will want to hear Judge Doyel’s biography, to show them that he is a Democrat with honest roots and a career of service.

The district’s growing Hispanic communities will want to know, in addition to his bio, that Bob is a product of public schools and will fight for quality education: Doyel used public education as a ladder to success. He came from nothing, but worked his way through school, entered the military, and went back to college and law school. Doyel will invest in local public schools, will raise teacher pay in Florida’s K-12 schools, and expand Bright Future scholarships so more students can afford a college education.

African-American voters will want to know, in addition to his bio, that Bob pushes for an economy that helps working families: Doyel says too many Floridians struggle to afford the rising cost of living and it’s time that working families get a real tax break. Doyel supports increasing jobs and skills training, investing in roads and infrastructure projects, creating high school apprentice programs, and lowering the cost of college. That way middle class families have good paying jobs, more economic security and the next generation is college or career ready.

About Kelli Stargel

Kelli Stargel is a typical politician who looks out for special interests, not the people of Polk and Lake Counties. Stargel cannot be trusted to protect our children, schools, drinking water, or way of life.

STARGEL’S RECORD

DRINKING WATER: In the State Senate, Stargel supported a bill to replenish our fresh drinking water with treated sewage water, from human waste. Stargel threatened local drinking water area. Stargel even supported a bill that would ban nearly all abortions in the state of Florida.

EDUCATION: Kelli Stargel voted to slash funding from Florida public schools by $1.1 billion dollars. Just last year, she voted to take taxpayer dollars from public schools in Lake and Polk County, and give the dollars to private, for-profit schools. Stargel made it easier to close local public schools and wants to send your tax dollars to for-profit schools.

CHOICE: Stargel voted to defund Planned Parenthood, even though they provide cancer screenings and birth control to many younger and working class women in this area. Stargel even supported a bill that would ban nearly all abortions in the state of Florida.

Drinking water, and Sen. Stargel selling out our quality of life, will be a particularly resonant issue among non-college voters and middle-aged women in Polk County.

Middle-aged women, especially, should be moved by the contrasting stances on education between Stargel and Doyel, and by the issue of choice and women’s health.
